Zip up or Zip down

Zippppppppp UP!

No we are not asking you to be silent. Today, let’s read about..(no price for guessing!) Zippers.

Zipper have come a long way since the 17th century. Its all started from a man, who had first created the sewing machine, Elias Howe. In 1851 he was granted a patent for an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure”. A man that self experimented and loved machinery Whitcomb L. Judson have invented the very first zipper. He had experimented and 1st patented this idea of ‘clasp locker’ on 1893. Only in the year 1905 did this zipper were started to find its way into pants and tops, but they were not considered practical. Due to that, zippers were not widely used.

Fast forwarding 8 years from 1905, Gideon Sundback, Whitcomb’s employee patented ‘Hookless Fasteners’ and with further experimentation, Separable Fasteners were made on 1917. After much remodeling of the 1st clasp locker, the fasteners became more reliable and the very first customers were from the USD Army. As this zippers were applied on gear and clothing of the troops of World War I.

B.F Goodrich Company had decided to place Gideon’s fastener on rubber boots for a start. It was from there too, that the name has been converted to ‘zipper’. It was more than 20 more years to influence and introduce the benefits of a zipper to the fashion industry as people were more inclined with buttons and clasp.

By 1930’s, the campaign of zippers have finally found its break, as zippers were finally being feature in children’s clothing. Campaigns praised the use of zippers as it indirectly promoted young children to dress in self help clothing. French fashion designers in 1937 began to rave about the zipper on Men’s trousers too, and the buttons were secondary choices. The invention and discovery of the use of zipper was name ‘Newest Tailoring Idea for Men’.

Pretty soon, zippers were sewn onto everything and everywhere. Zippers are no longer used just for jackets, but also travel luggage’s, pencil cases, Women’s dresses and skirts, shoes and countless of other day to day things. We too have begun to add zippers as a fine detailing for pockets, opening and inventions of zipper materials became wider. As modern times,  zippers are made invisible to the eyes and zipper are created in all variety of length, colours, quality and width.

The fabric or the more commonly used name is Stringer comes in many varieties. It is the ‘cloth’ of fabric that you usually see on the zipper. The choice is chosen by the designer, seamstress and even the customer chooses for their clothing if their outfits are custom made or bulk. The fabrics can come in Polyester, Cotton, Vinyl tapes and Nylon mono- filament; usually colours that are chosen are matching with the body material and shade.

Types of Zippers
Different types of zippers

Apart from the fabric used for the zip, the true characteristic of a zipper is the…teeth!

The variety of materials used for the teeth are equally as unique as the fabric used. Original zipper teeth are made from steel and some stainless steel. However as technology has bloomed, the teeth on the zipper has gone through a revolution. Some are made from Plastic moulds- which are softer in build and it helps to prevent pinches or pain if skin or fingers are accidentally caught in zip.

Nylon coil could also be used to be the zipper teeth. The coils are either finer or thicker depending on the mould used too. For the sturdy and hard-core usage, factories will recommend to use Metal or Anti Brass / Stainless steel zippers. Metal ones are usually used for denims, jackets, outdoor bags and even shoes (as they are able to withstand  all wear and tear and weather temperature).

Wonder how does it look like when you zip up your zips? The below is the mechanism of how the zipper works, as it enter zipper slider / puller brings the two slides together.

See this animated image that the two sides are joined together through zipper sliders

For something so small, you will be surprise that there are many components to a zipper. Each area plays an important role and you would be amazed each of it has its individual name. See the below for your extra known knowledge and facts.

Come read about the zipper components
Come read about the zipper components

The components of a zipper are:

  1. Top tape extension – This extension is allowance for the seamstress before they sew.
  2. Top Stop – This is particularly useful, so that the Pull Tab or the puller will not be pulled more than it should while the wearer is sewing.
  3. Slider – Helps to bring the left and the right together while the zips are being pulled up or downwards.
  4. Pull Tab- is also called as Puller, this will help assist wearer as they are fastening their zips.
  5. Tape  – This tape helps to joins or separates the elements when the zipper is opened or closed.
  6. Chain Width – The width of teeth is determined from here. Some are really wide, some are narrow. Depending on the mould.
  7. Bottom Stop – To prevent the Pull Tab from sliding downwards or its called a stopper
  8. Bottom Tape Extension – This extension is allowance to fold and hide the ‘tail’ for
  9. Single Tape Width – This width is a standard measurement, as the tape is not to irritate the skin of the wearer.
  10. Insertion Pin Boll – This Pin Boll helps to be fitted into the zipper ending when zipped up.
  11. Retainer Box – Inserting this will help to prevent the tape from fraying as well.

Though there are many mechanism and components to a zipper, its a true wonder how an invention has helped human race so much. From being able to keep your skin and body warm, to sealing your items safe a pouch or bag to attaching 2 items together.

Zippers are still the future of clothing whether it is applied on Men or Women’s clothing. Here in Amnig we will help you as much as possible to keep your items as safe as possible with zippers on pockets, zippers to zip you up warm during cool days.
