World No. 1 Women’s squash player, Datuk Nicol David

World No. 1 Women’s squash player, Datuk Nicol David showed up for a friendly game of squash with Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kyvat. Right after that, we caught up and got her to tell us how it felt going up against the Infiniti Red Bull Racing drivers and what it’s like to be one of the world’s greatest squash players.

Are you a Formula One fan? Yeah! I started following Formula One when the F1 race came to Malaysia. I really admire what the drivers go through, it’s so intense and they’re such amazing athletes to be racing those cars. Actually, they seem really chilled out! What’s the difference between your normal opponents and F1 drivers? Well, I think that squash players and F1 drivers are technically very different but in terms of physical training, there are similarities. You have to be strong and focused for both sports and I remember how Alex Yoong (Malaysian ex-Formula One driver) used to do his conditioning with squash players. From a scale of 1 – 10, how do you think Daniel and Daniil performed at squash? I’d say 6 for both of them! They have really good hand to eye coordination and they hit the ball really well. And if you gave them a bit more time, I’d probably have to watch out for them! RELATED STORY Daniel And Dany Pick Up The Racquet What do you do in your spare time? When I’m not training in Amsterdam, I love to draw and catch live gigs.

Oh! And I’ve taken up street dancing classes whenever I get the chance to fill up my time as well. What’s the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to you? Becoming the world champion for the first time was really the most amazing experience for me. But one of the most memorable moments I’ve ever had was last year! It was the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards in Malaysia and I was surrounded by so many world-class athletes and sporting legends. I even got the chance to present the ‘Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award’ to Rafael Nadal, it was just amazing. Since you’ve just gotten back in Malaysia, what’s the ‘one’ thing you must do? Eat! When you’re based overseas, the food here is the one thing that you miss the most. I love char kuey teow and in Penang when we’re coming from the airport on the way to my house, we’ll definitely stop by my favourite stall. And of course whenever I’m in town, I’ll always be catching up with my friends and family. What’s on your music playlist right now? Alicia Keys ‘We Are Here’ and ‘Glory’ by Common and John Legend. I feel that their voices on the tracks are so pure and it gets me pumped because I can really get into the music whenever I listen to them. Have you ever Googled yourself? Yes, but only for research! Sometimes I have to dig out old articles about my career when people ask for them. I’m not really fussed about what some people might say online, because I feel really privileged and so grateful to be where I am right now.

mimma-website-screenshot

Thought of sharing a bit on MIMMA (Malaysian Invasion Mixed Martial Arts).

Did you know, MIMMA is the first largest All-Malaysian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Amateur Tournament in Malaysia?

I discovered a couple of things about this organization. But let me tell you, above all, they have very dedicated staff managing the events and tournaments.

Hundred of fighters are getting into the cage to compete in the tournament this weekend happening in City Square shopping complex, in JB, Malaysia.

Check out the last seasons champions…mimma-season2-champions-amnig-online

One thing I realized is that they are aiming to nurture and grow the local Mixed Martial Arts talents scene by preparing a platform for amateurs to contend and put their highly honed skills and countless hours of dedicated training to the test.

As far as the weight classes go, it consists of 7 different weight classes which; Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight.

At what age can you start getting serious and joining the fights and tournaments with MIMMA? According to them, it’s 18-years old and above. As long as you’re in the right age group and have been trained in either…

  • Brazilian Jiu Jutsu
  • Boxing
  • Judo
  • Karate
  • Muay Thai
  • Silat
  • Taekwondo
  • Wuji
  • Wushu
  • Wrestling

…you’re most welcome to join them.

Oh yaa…by the way, the fighting championships are open to Malaysian citizens only.

Is there anything else you’ll gain (prize money or gifts) for getting horribly beat up in the ring? Of course! MIMMA is featuring the largest prize money ever for a local tournament which is RM150,000 in total!

Hundreds of participants will be seen taking part in this tournament to prove themselves in the MMA scene. You could be the next champion.

Fighter Highlight: Peter Davis, a Fighter, an Actor.

It is happening guys! The fight is going down on the 13th March, in Stadium Putra. Davis is fighting Meena. Hope you’ve got your tickets. Does Peter stand a chance to win this fight?

While we are waiting for the big day on 13th (Friday), I thought why not share some quick facts and useful insights about Peter Davis. Afterall, he is our Malaysian ‘super-hero’.

Peter, a Malaysian, was born on 9/7/1981 which means he is just 34-years old. He is of English-Chinese parentage. He weighs approximately 69.85kg and as far as height, he is 5’11’. Throughout his MMA career as a professional fighter, he has had 9 straight wins, 3 losses and 0 draws. Pretty good track record, wouldn’t you say?

(peter-win-loss-chart.jpg)

Peter’s fighthing style comes from a discipline called ‘wuji chuan’. Very few people are aware that wuji is actually a Malaysian creation. It bandishes ‘kungfu’ style fighting techniques and was propagated by Master Show Kuan Hooi, who was Davis’s sifu back in Britain.

Davis The Fighter

Did you hear about a real fight that took place on the streets between Peter Davis and a few biking punks? Here’s how it happened…(this is a true story)

A few years ago, one night, Peter was driving in KL with his girlfriend, heading up to a club to meet with friends.

At a traffic light junction, he was blocked by a motorcyclist. Davis politely told the guy to let him pass. But instead the biker continued to block his way even after Davis made his turn. The biker also started doing some weird stunts to annoy Davis.

When they reached an eatery, the biker got some of his friends there to join him, and they approached Davis’s car, shouting abusive words at him. One of them then hit the top of his car with a helmet.

Oh gosh, “not the car! I love my car.” So, he put a foot down and had to confront the matter.

What happens next?…

The club he was heading to was just nearby, so Davis parked his car and told his girlfriend to wait in the club. He knew he had to confront the ‘losers’ or else they were not going to stop harrassing him.

As he walked up to them, one of them took out a wrench and swang it at Davis. Davis moved quickly to avoid the swing and “bhoom”, with his fist, knocked the guy out to the ground. It was a TKO with just one straight box into his opponents face. When the other gang members saw what had happened, they apologised continously and quickly dragged their injured friend away.

That night Davis had won, yet another fight but unfortunately, he also broke the pinkie of his right hand and it took a month to heal.

Davis is not just an MMA fighter, he’s got his fingers and toes in the entertainment industry too. For example, he is an accomplished actor for both TV movies, dramas & commercials. Having appeared in the internationally acclaimed 2008 musical comedy Sell Out! (in which he also sings!), and various TV shows such as I Eat KL and What If. He even did a Malay film called ‘Apa Dosa Ku?’ which is a TV drama with Elaine Daily. It was about the Japanese invasion back in the 40s.

With such diverse background, many were sceptical if Davis would be a serious fighter in the MMA world. But I guess, they were all in for a surprise when he annihilated Singaporean Kim Hock in ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors in 2012 , stopping him within the first few seconds of the opening round with a stunning reverse hook kick.

Here is a video I discovered that shows some common MMA moves. Play it, it’s pretty awesome!

So, don’t forget…the fight between Davis & Meena Singh is happening this Friday, the 13th (sound spooky eh!). You don’t want to miss this fight. In your opinion whom you think will win, Davis or Meena?

How would you like to take off from the tallest waterfall?

You think I’m crazy…but this guy did it! Who? Paul Guschlbauer (a real extreme sportster). He impressed RedBull and of course…thousands of fans worldwide.

They say Paragliding is crazy fun…but I didn’t know it was this fun?!” (check out the video…its really cool)

It happened very swiftly, at Angel Falls. I wished I weren’t that busy and had the time to get out there and get into some  action myself. But I’ll tell you, paragliding ain’t for the faint-hearted. Agree or not?

Have you glided before? Please share with us your experience if you have, or haven’t.

Funniest thing yet…I didn’t even know Angel Falls is ‘the’ world’s largest uninterrupted waterfall. Did you? Seriously!

So, let’s see it from Paul’s perspective, what’s it like, falling from such a height. A little hard to describe in words would’nt you say so?

Imagine, you being up there, with the gush of wind hitting your face, and the cool air freezing your fingers. They say this is what superman feels when he is up in the air…hahaha. I wonder, what would it be really like, with all the mental psyche he needed to prepare, and then, free falling 1,000 metres into the Venezuelan treetops from atop a massive plateau right in the middle of the jungle?

Paul went on saying…

“I also learnt, its history (and name) are closely tied to the skies above it – it was revealed to the outside world in 1932 when aviator Jimmy Angel flew over it in his plane, and made iconic as the inspiration for Paradise Falls in the Disney Movie ‘UP’.”

About 100% Polyester

Here in Amnig, we support the environment by using recycled items..

Another type of fabrication that Amnig commonly uses is Polyester. This fabrication has is a less ordinary from natural fibres that are woven such as Cotton or wool. Though Polyester is made from manufactured polymers, Polyester brings many benefits to the wearer. The yarn on Polyesters tends to be resistant to growth of mildew and mold. This is an advantage for especially those who are staying in Tropic countries where humidity and moisture is high. Polyester is also easy to wash, is quick drying and the yarns are resistant to wear and tear. But one has to be careful with handling this fabrication, as it highly flammable.

This synthetic fibre is able to be blended with Natural fibres like Cotton too. This will help to sustain the lifespan of the fabrication, as it the best of both worlds. As when mixed, these yarns or fibers that are sewn into garments are resistant to wind and environmental conditions compared to just plant fibres.

How do you tell what are the characteristics of Polyester?

Do the hand feel test. Hold the polyester fabrics between your hands and fold it, you will notice that the shape of the fabric is retained and does not crease as fast as Cotton and the fibers are stronger when a slight pull is done- which means it does not damage easily after a few washes or drying. This makes Polyester an excellent choice for outdoor clothing.
